The JHS Pedals Hard Drive is JHS’s first fully original, modern distortion circuit—not a clone, rework, or variation of a classic design. Developed over eight years, it was created to capture the powerful high-gain sounds of ’90s and 2000s alternative rock, post-grunge, and modern rock.
Instead of following traditional pedal designs, JHS started from scratch. The Hard Drive combines cascaded gain stages, hard limiting, and a Class AB amplifier section with a highly flexible EQ circuit. The result is a wide range of modern distortion tones, from gritty tube-style crunch to massive, saturated walls of gain that can cut through a full band mix.
Versatile High-Gain Tone
The Hard Drive features a sweepable midrange EQ along with Baxandall-style bass and treble controls, giving you extensive control over the shape and character of your distortion. Whether you're after tight, aggressive rhythm tones, grinding crunch, or huge lead sounds, the Hard Drive provides the gain and EQ flexibility to get there.
The Final Design of Cliff Smith
The Hard Drive also holds a special place in JHS history. It was the final pedal design completed by former JHS head engineer Cliff Smith, whose prototype and design were finalized just weeks before his passing in 2021.
Cliff spent years experimenting with the circuit, exploring different gain stages and ways to make solid-state circuitry respond more like a valve amplifier. Rather than cloning a specific pedal or amp, the Hard Drive became an original design shaped by countless inspirations and experiments.
