Gibson Thunderbird Bass in Sunburst Perimeter

Gibson has introduced a new version of the iconic Thunderbird Bass, featuring updated finishes and specifications that combine its historic traits with modern enhancements. Available worldwide through authorized dealers, Gibson Garage locations, and Gibson.com, the new model comes in Ebony and Tobacco Burst Perimeter finishes.

Originally released in 1963, the Thunderbird was designed by famous automotive designer Ray Dietrich, who also designed the Gibson Firebird™. This iconic model sported a bold, curvaceous, and asymmetrical body shape that was innovative at its debut and remains highly recognizable today.

Early Thunderbird models featured a nine-ply, neck-through-body construction with mahogany wings, marking Gibson's first use of neck-through design on a bass. It was also Gibson’s first bass with a longer 34-inch scale length, moving away from the previous 30.5-inch scale.

This modern update showcases a solid mahogany body in the traditional Reverse shape, complete with a raised center section reminiscent of the original neck-through design. It has a glued-in, set mahogany neck with a fast SlimTaper™ profile and an updated Non-Reverse style headstock for easier tuning, familiar to current players. Hardware upgrades include Hipshot® Ultralite® Mini Clover tuners and a Hipshot Supertone bridge for precise intonation and adjustable action.

Power comes from two EB Bass humbucker high-output pickups, with independent volume controls allowing versatile tone blending. An overall master tone control offers further shaping options, and the signature three-ply white pickguard with the Thunderbird logo completes the look. Each Thunderbird Bass includes a Gibson hardshell case.
